California

California uses form REG 135 for vehicle bills of sale, signed by buyer and seller. A Los Angeles buyer submits it with the title to the DMV. A smog check usually accompanies the private sale.

Florida

Florida recommends a notarized vehicle bill of sale and a title transfer within 30 days. A Miami buyer files it with the county tax collector. The form sets the official sale date.

Texas

Texas bills of sale should list the VIN, odometer, and sale price for the title. A Houston buyer submits it to the county tax office. Notarization is not mandatory.

Durable, non-durable, and springing

A durable POA survives incapacity. A non-durable POA ends if the principal loses capacity. A springing POA activates only on a doctor-certified incapacity, which some banks require proof of before honoring it.

Limited versus general powers

A limited POA covers one task, such as selling a single property. A general POA covers broad financial matters. List the exact powers so the agent cannot exceed the grant.

Witnesses and notaries

Many states want the POA signed, witnessed, and acknowledged before a notary. A bank may ask for the notarized copy before it acts on the document, so store it with the estate papers.

Aging parent planning ahead

A parent grants a durable POA to an adult child to manage the checking account and speak with the bank during a hospital stay.

Selling property while abroad

An owner gives a limited POA to a trusted agent to sign closing papers for one property on a set date.

Managing a rental

A landlord gives a general POA so an agent can collect rent and arrange repairs during an extended trip.

Business signing authority

A member names an agent to sign routine vendor contracts within a stated spending limit.
